What a condescending way to give a simple pronunciation -- and then it was not very helpful. If you had said sci, as in science, that might have helped. But as you wrote it, sci would be pronounced skih. Next time, try Ah-Sigh-ee, a-sa-ee or just Ah-sigh. And don't get all bent out of shape if people don't know how to pronounce it.

ReplyDeleteI think that is the whole point that it should show the simplest way to make the sound. I know A LOT of Americans who would pronounce "sci" as "sky" because they don't know the basics of English. Don't assume that everyone who speaks English knows how to properly READ English.

I just love when people get tough online. There's nothing more ironic to me than a tough guy throwing cyber jabs at a person they'll never see from the security of their locked bedroom. And the name calling! Fantastic. And so original. Anyone who knows the English language knows many letter combinations sound different in context. "Sci" has a different pronunciation in "scissors", "scintillating", or "Joe Pesci".

In fact, the doofus who originally gave the pronunciation WAS condescending (totally unnecessary to repeat more than once, and, considering what a large percentage of our population are not native English speakers, poor choice for the middle syllable. According to Inogolo, a search site for the English pronunciation of words from other languages, the correct PHONETIC pronunciation is ah-sah-EE, with a note that it is also pronounced ah-"sigh"-EE. 'Nuff said, folks, other than that in this day of major melting-pot action in the US, more and more non-English words are going to enter OUR vocabularies. Thus, Inogolo.com is a useful one to bookmark.
